"Lahiny's Story"
From Jacmel, Haiti to East Flatbush, Brooklyn
Brooklyn artist Nina Talbot weaves elements of cultural heritage into her extraordinary portraits of immigrant shopkeepers and families in Brooklyn, with an eye for the visual elements of the setting that evoke the country of origin, and a keen interest in the ways their lives intersect with history.
The subjects and their families are Pakistani, Haitian, Puerto Rican, Hungarian, Guyanese, African-American, Chinese, Japanese, Polish and Czech -- all who have found their way to various Brooklyn neighborhoods.
In "Lahiny's Story," Lahiny Nereus shares with Talbot her vivid recollections living under the infamous Duvalier regime in Haiti.
